Horatio! I love you, clever little cucumber

I'll apologise for two posts in 24 hours. But, I'm excited!
I woke up today to see that my little bush cucumber (Horatio, the spacemaster bush cucumber) has put on a lot of growth and actually has a little fruit starting on it! Look really hard - there on the right - in front of the label - there is his first fruit! Last week Horatio, cucumber extraodaire, looked like this (down there - the very same plant) and these are the ones I've sent to a couple of pals to try.
They are easy to germinate and are a bush which are supposed to be better for pot growing and in small spaces - or in my case on my window sill. I've never grown these before - but so far I'm impressed.
And look, one week ONE WEEK, in a 9cm pot and its already trying to escape out of it and if you look really hard - there is a first fruit starting - and its not the end of April yet!!!

Clever little bush cucumber. I'm selling the extra plants I've got on ebay and I'm only a few extra but I'm happy if when they arrive at their new houses if they grow from the little jumbo plug once potted into this in a week - clever little plant! I've put a link in as I've been asked by a couple of folk for my ebay ID - so I hope that helps those of you that have asked, just click the link above!
Horatio, (I don't know why I name things, I just do!) anyway you gorgeous cucumber chappy I love you very much, on this very dreich day - and boy is it dreich - you've really cheered me up. Cucumbers on the windowsill - here we come! Yippee! He'll be in a big pot in a jiffy!

  3. Yay for cucumbers! I just planted mine out but I have spares still captured in pots. They are trying valiantly to escape and some have started to blossom. Good luck and happy fruiting Horatio!

  4. I'll start my cuke seeds 2nd week of May and plant out 1st week of June. I grow on trellises. I grow the all-female self-pollinating "English"-style (seedless) cukes and I can't get enough of them for cool summer salads! This year I'm growing 2 variety of the all female and 3 variety of 'bush' types, suitable for a 3-gallon pot. The trick is lots of compost and fish emulsion (cukes gobble nitrogen). Hope Horatio does well for you. :-D Check out my 'vegetable page' for cuke pics.

  5. Oooh, might have to try them next year! No room for large trailing plant in the greenhouse, but maybe one of those - but next year, this year is the Year of the Tomato!

  9. Gillibob - nice to see you on this side of the fence! Horatio is a great name for a spider - everything in my life is normally called 'Humphrey' but I thought I'd have a change this time :)

  13. Oh dear, what have they banned or regulated now? That dratted green brigade. Is there anything useful left in the world. Don't be disheartened - a few of the green brigade are all right really. Honest.
    Nice to see you!
