They return again

The swans are beginning to fill up the lochs again in Orkney, just like the year before and the years before that. Their return announces the shortness of the days and the bitter impatient song of the winter winds.  Hats are donned, boots slipped on, scarves guard our faces. Walking each day is ever more important now that the swans have returned and the daylight is going so very quickly. Its nice to see them again, I took this photo last year, in mid November again when the light went quickly looking over stenness loch. The scene hasn't changed much, almost one year later, I wonder how long the views have been like this and how long they will remain so peaceful, forever I hope.

  1. Lovely photo. Looks truly deligtful, though I bet it was cold! These will probably be the swans we used to have for summer in northern Sweden: Bewicks and mostly Whoopers! Beautiful birds.

  2. Incredible photo. I did not realize that swams migrated north to winter. They are so beautiful.

  4. That's a beautiful photo. I've heard of geese migrating, but not swans. I've only seen swans in parks, never thought of them in the wild.

  7. Really stunning photo, its wonderful when the migration of swans and geese takes place. When we lived in the NW of England we used to rush out to see the thousands of Bewick and Whooper swans that flew over us each autumn on their way to Martin Mere nature reserve, wonderful sound as they communicate with each other.

  8. There's something comforting about the rhythm of the seasons and the attendant migrations. Maybe that is why I get upset when the "normal" seasonal flows get disrupted. Loving the increasingly poetic writing by the way!
